In the mid aughts I gained employment in Marengo, Iowa (pop. 3,500) as county editor of the Marengo Pioneer-Republican. My boss gave me a weekly column, which he titled, “In the Nick of Time.” People read it. My apologies.
After a brief stop in Philly and a wholly entertaining stint as special sections coordinator for The Press of Atlantic City, I moved to Tokyo. Eventually I was appointed editorial director of Tokyo Weekender magazine. My freelance work appeared in Kinfolk, Wall Street Journal-Asia, Time Out Tokyo, Tokyo Art Beat, etc.
I now reside in Singapore as a traveling spouse.
My career peaked in 2002. As the environmental beat reporter for the University of Iowa student newspaper The Daily Iowan, I was assigned to interview Kurt Vonnegut. Vonnegut told me, quote, “We are here on Earth to fart around.”
I follow that advice wholeheartedly and this blog is evidence of that.

I thought maybe you moved from Iowa because Terry Branstad was re- re-elected governor. I would.

Hi Nick, I’ve really enjoyed reading your posts. My family is about to move to Tokyo for a 2 year assignment at the end of December, and I stumbled into your blog while looking for Disc Golf courses in Tokyo.
Got hooked on the golf post then moved on to several of the hiking entries… all pursuits I hope to be following once we get there.
Thanks for the humor and insight.
